After an amazing performance at the New York International Open, for the first time as a black belt competing in the rooster weight division, Prof. Josef Manuel headed out to Long Beach, California chasing his dream of winning the most prestigious title in the world of "Arte Suave," the World Championships of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. On Saturday in the preliminaries, Josef advanced against Mokoto Sawada, to face Joseph Capizzi in the quarter finals, and  in a technical showdown Professor Manuel passed Cappizi's guard, winning with a score of 3-0. He then advanced to the semi-finals to face the defending rooster weight world champion, Bruno Malfacine. Abandoning the strategy of winning by points, Prof. Manuel went head-to-head with Malfacine, in a ten minute exchange of submissions and positions, making Malfacine, who almost supernaturally plows through the opponents in his division , look "human." In the end after an amazing run, Prof. Manuel comes home with a bronze medal, and stands on the podium with the best in the world.
